Many years I travelled to Italy with my parents. But we stayed on a special campsite mostly. But in 1995 I have been on a trip through Italy to see more of it.
South Tirol in the summer
First stop was South Tirol which I already knew from skiing holidays. In the summer when the hills are green it is very nice as well.
Venice
I have been to Venice quiet often. So I tried to find places where the tourists are not so numerous. So I found quiet interesting "streets".
Burano
The lagoon of Venice has got more small islands than only Venice itself. One of them is Burano. In Burano they produce bone-lace. The colourful houses are very picturesque as well.
Abendstimmung an der Lagune
I have found out that the lagoon is very beautiful and photogenic at sunset if the weather is fine.
San Marino
San Marino is the smallest and oldest Republic of the world in the midst of Italy. A lot of stamp-collectors will know it. High above the town which is situated at a mountain the three towers of the castle are enthroned. One of them you can see on this picture.
Gargano
A very special atmosphere for the sunset I enjoyed at this fish-restaurant which is placed on a platform for fishing. The restaurant was very simple, has a fantastic view and the fish is caught freshly there. I had a very tasty Risotto "Frutti di mare"!
Herkulaneum
If you thought that this picture is from Pompeji you are not too wrong. Herkulaneum is placed close to the volcano "Vesuv" as well and was buried at the same time as Pompeji. But Herkulaneum was not buried by ash but by mud. So the houses are less destroyed than in Pompeji.
Thermal spring at Herkulaneum
It is fascinating how much is left from the buildings that have been destroyed in 79 A.D. You can see that very well from the mosaics in the thermal spring. I liked Herkulaneum more than Pompeji because its buildings are better preserved as in Pompeji and there are less tourists.
Colosseum of Rome
Of course I have been one of the numerous tourists who wanted to see the Colosseum. But I wasn't too enthusiastic about the Forum Romanum after I had been to Herkulaneum and Pompeji before.
Siena
At the top of this beautiful city they built the cathedral of Siena with its zebra-look. White and black marble alternate with each other. But what you see as cathedral today should have been only the side-aisle of the unfinished cathedral. I have problems to imagine how big it would have become if they would have finished it.
